Czechmate?
Article Abstract:
Political woes led by widespread corruption beset the Czech Republic, once hailed as among the top emerging eastern European economies. Its troubles are attributed to a lack of regulation in most of the new sectors which emerged after a free market economy was imposed. As the country prepares for the next round of elections, the Czech koruna continues to weaken after a currency crisis reached alarming levels in spring of 1998, while the enormous trade deficit shows no signs of receding. White collar crimes and embezzlement continue to hound the banking and finance sectors, compounded by the fact that the former cannot be completely privatized. Only when the political uncertainty stemming for a struggle for power between the Civic Democratic Party and the social-democrats is settled can the Czech Republic finally recover its lost economic momentum.

Acidoswitchable NLO-phores: Benzimidazolo[2,3-b]oxazolidines
Article Abstract:
A series of acidoswitchable nonlinear optical (NLO)-phores is presented by combining the 9-methylbenzimidazolo[2,3-b]-oxazolidine core with various pi systems such as phenylethenyl, phenylethynyl and naphthylethenyl. The results have shown that NLO-phores based on the benzimidazolo[2,3-b]oxazolidine moiety displays a substantial NLO contrast between the open and closed forms, as a result of pH variations.

No pix, no Di: as our royal fever fades, let us at least get the memory and lessons of it right
Article Abstract:
The immodest mourning over the death of Princess Diana merely highlights what a creature of the media she was. For without media attention, her battle with the House of Windsor would have gone unnoticed by most of the world. But people who wish to escape into fairy tales crave exactly what the media provided.
